Pier Francesco Tosi

Pier Francesco Tosi (* August 13, 1654 in Cesena, † after 16 July 1732 in Faenza ) was an Italian castrato, composer and author of an important school of singing.

Life

Tosi, the son of the Bolognese composer Giuseppe Felice Tosi, appeared as a soprano castrato in his own words " at almost all the courts of Europe " on ( " poco che tutte le men corti d' Europe "). His life can not be fully traced, but some data are known. In 1682 he went to London, where he worked as a singer and singing teacher. In the period 1705-1711 was Tosi composer in the imperial court in Vienna and at the same time diplomatic representative of the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm.

1723 was Tosi print his Opinioni and traveled for this purpose to Bologna. After another stay in London in 1727, he was ordained a priest in 1730 in Bologna.

Work

Tosi is mainly known for his singing school Opinioni de ' cantori antichi, e moderni o sopra il canto Sieno Osservazioni figurato (Bologna 1723). This took place in Europe widespread, what the English translation by John Ernest Galliard (London 1742 or 1743) and the German by Johann Friedrich Agricola (Berlin 1757) demonstrate.
