Nervi was born the son of posts originating from Savona parents Luisa and Antonio Bartoli. By the profession of the father who often changed his place of employment as a senior postal official, Nervi spent his youth in several Italian cities. Finally, he studied at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Bologna, where he completed on July 28, 1913 his studies with a diploma. He then worked until 1923 in the technical department of the company for concrete structures in Bologna and Florence. Prof. Attilio Muggia, in which Nervi had studied, the director of this company was. After the end of World War I, he transferred Nervi as the office manager of the branch in Florence. 1923 Nervi became independent in Rome and founded together with Rodolfo Nebbiosi his own company, the " Società INGG. Nervi e Nebbiosi ". In 1924, he married Irene Calosi. From this marriage four sons Antonio, Mario, Carlo and Vittorio emerged. In 1932 he founded together with his cousin, the engineer Giovanni Bartoli, The Office in Rome " Società INGG. Nervi e Bartoli ". In 1954, his eldest son, Antonio (* 1925) in this serviced office in 1960 was followed by the two sons Mario (* 1926) and Vittorio ( born 1930 ). Nervi's fourth son Carlo worked as a consultant oncologist in Rome.

Nervi worked as a designer, structural engineer, engineer and consultant. His first internationally recognized work was the municipal stadium of Florence (built 1930-1932 ) with 35,000 seats (today's Stadio Artemio Franchi ), an inexpensive, visible concrete structure with cantilevered spiral staircase and striking Marathon tower. In 1935, he won the competition for aircraft hangars in Orbetello, which were completed by 1938.

In most of his buildings Nervi uses the geometry to a different type of shell construction. It is often characterized by a spatial latticework of rebar with applied concrete surfaces. His buildings also always aimed at a cost-effective design. In the hangars in Orbetello and Torre del Lago (1940-1943), he used a lightweight designs with partly prefabricated concrete elements. He pointed to new possibilities with regard to skills and efficiency.

In 1945 he taught at the " Scuola di Architettura Organica " (in the Palazzo del Drago ) for which was founded by Bruno Zevi association of organic architecture ( APAO ) in Rome, the subject " construction technology". From 1946 to 1961 he led in Rome as a full professor of the Department of Engineering and Material Science at the Faculty of Architecture of the Università della Sapienza. During this time he invented the ferro- cement. From 1948 to 1949 he designed and constructed the exhibition hall Torino Expositions in Turin. For the implementation of the construction Nervi designed a wheeled tubular frame, for which he applied for a patent.

Other important design services are the ballroom in Chianciano Terme with a reticulated vault (1950-1952), the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (1953-1958), the Pirelli Tower in Milan (1955-1958) and the Stadio Flaminio in Rome. Among the later works include the Vatican audience hall was built in 1970.

Nervi has numerous scientific papers written, including ' art or science of building? ' ( ' Sienza o arte del costruire? ', 1945), ' The language of architecture ' ( ' El lenguaye Arquitectonico ', 1950) and 'New Buildings ' ( ' Nuove Strutture ', 1963).
