Pierce County (Georgia)
The Pierce County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Blackshear.
Geography
The County is located in southeastern Georgia, is around 90 km from both the Atlantic and the northern border of Florida and has an area of 891 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Wayne County, Brantley County, goods County, Bacon County and Appling County.
History
Pierce County was formed on December 8, 1857 as 119 County Georgia from portions of Ware County. It was named after Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States.

According to the census of 2000, there were 15,636 people in Pierce County. Of these, 115 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,958 households and 4,438 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.90 percent White, 10.91 percent Black or African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.97 percent from other races groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.28 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,958 households out of which 34.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 25.5 percent were non-families. 23.1 percent of all households and 9.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 to 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.2 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,895, and the median income for a family $ 35,903. Males have a median income of $ 28,331, women $ 19,771. The per capita income was $ 14,230. 14.4 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
