Pierre Brumoy

Pierre Brumoy ( born August 26, 1688 in Rouen, † April 16, 1742 in Paris) was a French writer. He was a Jesuit and staff of the Journal de Trévoux.

Brumoy taught at the colleges of his order. Besides his work for the Journal, he published several books, translated classical Greek authors and dealt with theoretical issues of poetry, especially the theater.

Work

The work that established his reputation in the history of literature is its comprehensive presentation of the theater of the Greeks. The multi -volume work Théâtre des Grecs contains complete translations of seven plays, summaries and analyzes of many other tragedies and comedies, as well as fundamental treatises on the theater, the origin of the tragedy and the relationship between the ancient and the modern theater ( Sur le théâtre grec; sur l' origine de la tragédie; sur le théâtre du parallèle ancien et du modern ). Despite linguistic deficiencies in translation and a narrow view of the work Brumoys the merit too, ancient authors whose texts were difficult to access, to have made available to a wider audience.

Brumoys collective editions of his writings Recueil de diverses pièces en prose et en vers and the four-volume Oeuvres diverses (Paris 1741) contain various treatises, three tragedies, two Verskomödien, which were performed at the Jesuit schools, and two seals in Latin, one on the Passion Christ, the other with the title La Verrerie. In addition, he worked on the book Resolutions d'Espagne of Father d' Orléans, also a member of the Jesuit order, and the Histoire de Rienzi of you Cerceau.
