Pierre Chambon

Pierre Chambon ( born February 7, 1931 in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin ) is a French geneticist.

Chambon studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg, where he received his doctorate in 1958. He was the long-time director ( and founder ) of the Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire ( IGBMC ) of the University of Strasbourg, Illkirch- Graffenstaden and with Jean -Pierre Ebel, founder of the École supérieure de biotechnology de Strasbourg ( ESBS ). He is a member of the Académie des sciences, and now teaches at the Collège de France in Paris. He is Director of the Institute clinique de la souris (ICS ).

His investigations of proteins that are involved in the translation of genetic information by intracellular messengers that are considered important for the cell and tumor biology. He was from the 1970s, one of the pioneers in the application of modern genetic engineering techniques in the study of gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. He identified RNA polymerase II (B ), different transcriptional control elements and cloned and examined the function of nuclear receptors for hormones. By Ronald M. Evans, he discovered the receptor for retinoic acid in the cell with applications in cancer research and developmental biology.
