Pierre Cochereau

Pierre Eugène Charles Cochereau ( born July 9, 1924 in Saint- Mandé, † 5 March 1984 in Lyon) was a French composer, organist and music teacher.

Life

In 1929, after several months of violin lessons, Pierre Cochereau began piano lessons with Marius- François Gaillard to take. 1933 Marguerite Long his piano teacher, in 1936 Paul Pannesay. His first organ lessons he took in 1938 at the age of 14 years, Marie -Louise Girod. In 1941 he continued his organ studies under Paul Delafosse, titular organist at St. Roch in Paris, fort, whom he succeeded in the following year. Finally, André Fleury Cochereau organ teacher was the Paris Conservatoire until the entry.

At his father's request Cochereau took in 1942 to study law in Paris, but he dropped out in favor of a musical career after a year. 1943 Pierre Cochereau entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he remained until his graduation in 1949 Awards in harmony (Class Maurice Duruflé ), Music History (Class Norbert Dufourcq ), fugue and counterpoint (Class Noël Gallon ), composition (Class Tony Aubin ) and organ (Class Marcel Dupré ) received.

In September 1948 Cochereau undertook his first concert tour to Hungary. A year later he married the pianist and composer Nicole Lacroix. From this marriage two children were born: Jean -Marc Cochereau, conductor and is currently director of the Conservatory in Tours, and Marie -Pierre Cochereau, a professional harpist.

1949, at the age of 26, Pierre Cochereau was appointed director of the Conservatory in Le Mans, where he worked until 1956. In 1955, the appointment was made to the titular organist at the Cathedral of Notre- Dame de Paris, where he succeeded Léonce de Saint -Martin ( 1886-1954 ).

1956 his recording of the symphony Passion Op 23 by Marcel Dupré with the Grand Prix du Disque Award. In the same year Cochereau undertook the first of 25 tours throughout the United States.

Cochereau 1961 was appointed director of the Conservatory in Nice, whose direction he left in 1979 in favor of the Directorate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon.

On the night of the 5th to March 6, 1984 Pierre Cochereau died unexpectedly of a heart attack in Lyon. His grave is located in the Cimetière Belleville in Paris.

Pierre Cochereau was one of the greatest organists and improvisers of the 20th century. His concert tours have taken him to every continent. He was a popular guest on numerous music festivals and competition juror, as in the prestigious Grand Prix de Chartres organ competition. In addition, he made numerous recordings, including the organ symphonies of Louis Vierne.

His international recognition owed ​​Pierre Cochereau not least his improvisational skills, about the his former teacher, Marcel Dupré said: " Pierre Cochereau is in the history of contemporary organ a phenomenon without parallel. " In addition Cochereau left several compositions, primarily for the organ, but also chamber music and choral works.
