Pierre Favre (musician)

Pierre Favre ( born June 2, 1937 in Le Locle ) is a Swiss jazz drummer and percussionist.

Life

Favre started playing drums at the age of 15 years as a self-taught with his brother and Raymond Droz. In 1954 he became a professional musician, playing bebop, but also Dixieland and New Orleans jazz. Particularly affected was he initially by Philly Joe Jones, Bud Powell and Benny Bailey. He played firmly in dance bands and from 1957 to 1960 in the orchestra of Radio Basel Cedric Dumont, by the way but also with George Gruntz, Flavio Ambrosetti and Barney Wilen. In addition, Favre Chet Baker accompanied the first festival in the Belgian Comblain- La-Tour, in the following year Dusko Goykovich.

In the 1960s, Favre has worked as a percussionist in the orchestra by Max Greger and as a technician for Paiste Cymbals obertöniger in the development and develops a new conception of melodic percussion. Around the conventional jazz drumming therefore his instrument changed. It is first in the free interplay with pianist Irène Schweizer and bassist Peter Kowald, but also with Michel Portal, with Joe Haider and in particular with the French singer Tamia and Albert Mangelsdorff an increasingly independent body of sound. Since about 1976 Favre also occurs in solo concerts, combines his game on the other hand with other drummers in larger percussion ensembles (including with Naná Vasconcelos, Paul Motian, Fredy Studer, but also with Jon Balke and Lucas Niggli ). In workshops he passes on his knowledge to younger drummers on.

Currently, he frequently accompanied the dancers Michel Casanovas, occurs in a duo with the tuba player Michel Godard and Serpent or the pipa player Yang Jing and directs an ensemble with two horns, two guitar players, a harpist and double bass ( Fleuve, 2006).
