Pierre Grimal

Pierre Grimal (* November 21, 1912 in Paris, † October 11, 1996 same place ) was a French classical scholar and historian. Grimal is considered one of the most influential and more powerful classical philologists of the 20th century.

Grimal studied from 1932 at the École Normale Superieure. 1935 Grimal Agrégé des Lettres, 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the École française de Rome. There he was taught by Jean Bayet and Jérôme Carcopino. After that, he was a high school teacher in Rennes. In 1944 he received his doctorate in the gardens of the Romans (Les Jardins romains. Essai sur le naturalisme romain ). In 1941 he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Caen, where he remained until 1945. He then moved to 1952 at the University of Bordeaux. Since 1952 he taught Latin philologist and Roman culture at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Grimal wrote numerous books both specialized scientific nature, popular scientific nature and even in the form of fiction. His main work is considered in 1960 published La Romaine civilization, which was quickly translated into other languages, including in 1961 and German ( "Roman cultural history "). The general public he was known as the co-author of the sixth and the seventh volume of the fishing world history and as the editor of the "Myths of the peoples."

Grimal also wrote historical novel ( Mémoires de T. Pomponius Atticus, Mémoires d' Agrippine, Le procès de Néron ) and translated from the Latin of Cicero, Seneca, Frontinus (On the aqueducts of Rome), Tacitus (total work, La Pleiade ), Apuleius Petronius ( Satyricon ), Plautus ( complete works ) and Terence ( complete works ) into French. From the Greek, he translated Heliodorus, Lucian of Samosata, Flavius ​​Philostratus, Longos, Achilles Tatius, Chariton of Aphrodisias (all in the series of Greek and Roman novels of the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade ).

In 1964 he became Knight of the Legion of Honour. In 1975 he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1985 and was its president.

The Egyptologist Nicolas Grimal is his son.
