Pierre Gros

Pierre Gros ( born May 7, 1939 in Incheville ) is a French classical archaeologist and Latinist.

Gros studied since 1960 at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and received 1963 Agrégation. From 1966 to 1969 he was a member of the École française de Rome. From 1969 to 1972 he was an assistant for Latin Studies at the Sorbonne, 1972-1976 Directeur des Études at the École française de Rome, 1974 he was habilitated for Docteur d'Etat. From 1976 taught until his retirement in 2004 as professor of Latin language and civilization at the Université de Provence. Since 1995 he was a member of the Institut universitaire de France. From 1981 to 1995 he headed the Institut de recherches sur l'architecture antique at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique.

As a specialist in Hellenistic and Roman architecture and urban development Pierre Gros participated in numerous excavations in Italy, France, Tunisia and Turkey. In addition, he is a distinguished expert Vitruvius and editor of an influential critical part of the plant output.

Pierre Gros is a member of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio, Vicenza, Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute. In 2010 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize -. Since 2012 he is a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.
