Pierre Hupé

Pierre Horn ( born March 22, 1907 in Baye (Marne ); † August 23, 2003 in Paris) was a French paleontologist.

Horn studied science in Strasbourg and Nancy, where he passed the final examinations ( Agrégation ) in 1931 with honors and conducted research at the geneticist Lucien CUENOT. Horn was also an outstanding draftsman, for which he also won prizes at the University. After that, he was a high school teacher for science. In the 1930s he undertook first geological studies commissioned by Professor Charles Jacob in the Pyrenees. During World War II he was an artillery officer and received the Croix de Guerre. 1945 to 1949 he worked for the CNRS and from 1951 at the Laboratory of Geology of the Sorbonne. He received in 1960 a full professor of paleontology at the Sorbonne (later the University of Paris VI, Pierre et Marie Curie ) and founded in 1967 the Laboratory of Paleontology, invertebrates, whose director he was until his retirement in 1977. It was disbanded in 1987.

He is known for some classic works on trilobites, especially their classification ( he published in the 1950s, a revised classification of trilobites ) and trilobites of the lower Cambrian in Morocco, which he also used for the detailed stratigraphy of the Cambrian in the region. For his work, initially undertaken at the invitation of Service Geologique du Maroc in 1952, and culminating in a monograph on the lower and middle Cambrian and Ordovician in southern Morocco, he gained international recognition and was awarded the Charles Doolittle Walcott Medal in 1957. In 1959 he received his doctorate with Nouvelle contribution al'etude you Cambrien Marocain.

His trilobite collection he bequeathed to the part of the University of Rennes I, on the other part of the Natural History Museum in Havre.
