Pierre Matisse

Pierre Matisse ( born June 13, 1900 in Bohain -en- Vermandois, † August 10, 1989 in Monaco ) was a French- American art dealer. He founded in 1931 the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York.

Life

Pierre Matisse, the younger son of the painter Henri Matisse wanted to emulate his father and become a painter; he had an exhibition at the Salon des Independants. However, in 1923 he made the decision to become an art dealer, and accepted a position in the known gallery Barbazanges - Hodebert in Paris. A year later, he left Paris and moved to New York, where he in 1931 a gallery for mainly European modern art founded in Manhattan, which he led until his death. The Pierre Matisse Gallery had its seat in the Fuller Building (now the Flatiron Building ) in 41 East 57th Street. Matisse represented in the U.S. for decades, Joan Miró, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti and Jean Dubuffet.

From 3 March to 28 March 1942, the exhibition was " Artists in Exile" held at the Pierre Matisse Gallery. With one factory 14 artists were represented: Roberto Matta, Ossip Zadkine, Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, André Breton, Piet Mondrian, André Masson, Amédée Ozenfant, Jacques Lipchitz, Pavel Tchelitchev, Kurt Seligmann and Eugene Berman.

In the years 1931 to 1989 Pierre Matisse organized hundreds of exhibitions. In 1945 he exhibited for the first time in Miró's Constellations. 1948, the first retrospective of Giacometti's sculptures took place in his gallery, and a year later he showed the late works of his father, Henri Matisse, including the first issued paper cuts ( gouache cut-outs ).

From his estate in 1992, a large bundle with paintings by Henri Matisse, Miró, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Paul Cézanne and Georges Rouault as Dation, so compensation gift for inheritance tax, in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris passed. A foundation established by his widow Maria- Gaetana Matisse in 1995 gave 2004 as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York about 100 works of art from his personal collection worth over 100 million U.S. dollars: the Pierre and Maria Gaetana Matisse Collection -.

While Matisse's time in the U.S. he was a close relationship with his father Henri Matisse upright. Their extensive correspondence and the archives of the Pierre Matisse Gallery is kept City in the Morgan Library in New York.

Family

Matisse was married three times. In 1929, the wedding with Alexina " Teeny " Sattler took place. They had the children Paul, Jacqueline and Peter. The marriage broke up in 1949, when Matisse in the second wife of Roberto Matta, Matta Patricia Kane ( 1923-1972 ), fell in love and married her after the divorce. Teeny married in 1954 Marcel Duchamp. After Patricia's death in 1972 Matisse married in 1974 Maria- Gaetana " Tana " from Spreti ( 1943-2001 ), the daughter of the diplomat Charles of Spreti.
