Pierre is the capital of the U.S. state of South Dakota and is located on the Missouri River, near Lake Oahe in the center of the state. The city is also the administrative seat of Hughes County.

Geography

Pierre is located on the U.S. Highways 14 and 83 east of the city is a regional airport. Pierre is one of only five major cities that are not on an Interstate Highway ( Highway ) lie.

History

Pierre was founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite the Fort Pierre. In 1889, Pierre became the capital of South Dakota, earlier it was Yankton ( 1861-1883 ) and Bismarck ( 1883-1889 ).

In 2003, 13,876 people live in Pierre, of which 88.91 % White, 0.20 % African American, 8.56% Native American, 0.46 % Asian, 1.25 % Latino and 0.62% other ethnicities.

  • The South Dakota Discovery Center & Museum. Here are handled in a playful way with science.
  • The feature film " The Dances with Wolves " was shot not far from Pierre.
