Pierre Spies

Pierre Johan Spies ( born June 8, 1985 in Pretoria) is a South African rugby union player who plays as a winger and number eight for the South African national team in the Currie Cup for the Blue Bulls and the Super 14 for the Bulls.

Career

Spies went to as a teenager many sports such as athletics, swimming, tennis and cricket. Among other things, he was South African champion in discus and qualified for the Junior World Championships in the 100 -meter sprint. His best time is on this route at 10.7 seconds.

In 2005, Spies was the first time at the age of 19 for the Bulls. After just one year as a professional rugby player, he was appointed to the Executive of the South African national team. Against Australia he came to his debut. He was regarded as a safe candidate for a place in the ranks of the " Springboks " for World Cup 2007, but he could not participate because of blood clots in the tournament in the lungs. He returned the following year and played an outstanding season. He was voted the best player of South Africa and was part of the team that could win against all the British teams in November 2008. In 2009 he was part of the squad in South Africa to tour the British and Irish Lions. The Springboks won the series 2-1 and also secured the third title in the Tri Nations in the same year.

Private life

Spies has two sisters and is married to Juanne Weidemann since December 2008. His father of the same name also played for the Blue Bulls. He died shortly before the national debut of his son.
