Pierre Van Dormael

Pierre Van Dormael ( born May 24, 1952 in Ukkel, † 3 September 2008) was a Belgian guitarist of pop and jazz music.

Life and work

Van Dormael was one of the founders of the " Nasa Na Band", a precursor to the band influential Belgian avant-garde jazz group " Aka Moon ". Involved with the saxophonist Fabrizio Cassol, bassist and drummer Michel Hatzigeorgiou Stéphane Galland, which also form the core of Aka Moon were. Van Dormael also played as a guest on the albums " Ganesh " in 1997 and " Guitars" in 2002 by Aka Moon. With saxophonist Pierre Vaiana and bassist Jean -Louis Rassinfosse he founded the group " L' Ame des Poètes " ( self-titled album in 1992 and " L' Été India " in 1994 Igloo ). He also taught for a time music in West Africa. With the kora player Soriba Kouyate and bassist Otti Van der Werf he took in 1997 released the album " Djigui " on. He also recorded and played with the groups " Octurn " and " Deep in the Deep".

In 1988, he was the " James Baldwin Project" of the singer David Linx involved ( album " A Lover's Question" on Label Bleu ). In 2005 he was a member of the " Philip Catherine Guitar Orchestra". In 2001 he released an album " vivaces " with his group " vivaces ".

Van Dormael also wrote film scores for the movies his brother Jaco Van Dormael, such as the successful film " Toto the Hero" (1991) and " Le jour huitième " (1996). The composition " Undercover" was used as theme song for the film " Mr. Nobody " (2009 ) was used.

In 2007 he received the Django d' Or ( Belgium) as " Established Musicians ".

On September 3, 2008 Van Dormael died of cancer.
