Pieter Both

Pieter Both (* 1568 in Amersfoort, † March 6, 1615 in Mauritius ) was the first Governor-General of Dutch East Indies.

Work

Little is known about his early life. From 1599 was Both Admiral in the Brabant Company. In the same year he sailed with four ships to the East Indies. As the newly founded Dutch East India Company aufstellte a government for the East Indies, was the first Governor-General Pieter Both. He has held this position of 19 December 1610 to 6 November 1614. During this time he signed contracts with the Moluccas and Timor conquered. He was succeeded by Gerard Reynst. He left the island with four ships, two of which fell on March 6, 1615 near Mauritius and Pieter Both drowned.

According to him also the second highest mountain of Mauritius Pieter Both is named.
