Pieter Coecke van Aelst

Pieter van Aelst Pieter Coecke van Aelst, or (* August 4, 1502 in Aalst, † December 6, 1550 in Brussels) was a Flemish painter.

Life

Pieter Coecke van Aelst was a student of Bernard van Orley. According to a study trip to Italy around 1524-25 he joined in 1527 the St. Luke's Guild in Antwerp in as champion. Already for the years 1522-23 he is known in Antwerp and was probably as a journeyman in the workshop of his future father- Jan van Dornicke ( the Master of 1518) worked. In 1533, a trip to Constantinople Opel follows.

His artistic work has receded into the background in comparison with its publishing activities. Also, architectural designs and templates for stained glass and tapestries to come from his hand. His paintings follow the history of art in the work of the Antwerp Mannerist. In addition, Pieter Coecke van Aelst was characterized as a translator of Sebastiano Serlio, whose third book in 1539 in Flemish and in 1545 appeared in French. Pieter Coecke van Aelst was a teacher and father of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. His wife Mayken Verhulst worked as a teacher and taught after the death of her husband, the son- in watercolor painting.
