Pieter Nuyts

Pieter Nuyts (* 1598 in Middelburg, † December 11, 1655 ) was a Dutch explorer and governor.

Pieter Nuyts explored 1626-1627 on the ship Gulden Zeepaerdt (Golden Seahorse ) under the command of François Thijssen about 1,600 kilometers of the South Australian coast and mapped them. Many places in Australia were named after him, including the islands of Nuyts Archipelago with the thereon 53.5 square kilometers Nuyts Archipelago - - Conservation Park in the Great Australian Bight, but also the Nuytsia floribunda, a native plant species in this area from the family of belt flower plants.

From June 28, 1627 to May 9, 1630 he was governor of the Dutch colony of Formosa, now Taiwan.
