Pietro I. Candiano

Pietro I Candiano (c. 842; † September 18 887 ) was the 16th Doge of the Republic of Venice in 887

Candiano was elected to the side of the aged Giovanni II Participazio around April 887. However, he already died on September 18, 887 on the Adriatic Sea in a battle with Dalmatian pirates who had established themselves at the mouth of the Neretva. He was the first Doge, who died in a battle for the Republic. The Pirates were able to for the next decades (up to 998 ) reap even Tribute of Venice. His son, Peter II Candiano, later followed him ( 932-939 ) to the Doge.
