Pietro Longhi

Pietro Longhi ( November 5, 1702 in Venice *, † May 8, 1785 ) was a painter of the Venetian Rococo. He painted frescoes, altarpieces, portraits and genre scenes from the Venice of his time.

Life and work

Longhi was born the son of Alessandro and Antonia Falca. His birth name he changed in 1733 when he joined the Venetian Fraglia dei Pittori in the artist name Pietro Longhi. Longhi married in 1732 Caterina Maria Rizzi, with whom he had eleven children, but, except for three, died early. His only surviving son, Alessandro Longhi was also a painter. 1756 he entered the Accademia di pittura e scultura in Venice, where he taught until 1780.

Longhi was initially trained by a native of Verona, Antonio Balestra, who had been an employee of the Roman Carlo Maratta. Longhi's first pictures as the altarpiece in San Pellegrino in Verona were, or by their - marked influences, as well as his first big order for a member of the Venetian nobility, the fresco in the Palazzo Sagredo on the subject giants fall - late Baroque.
