At the University of Bologna he was in the years 1648 and 1649 Professor of arithmetic, then from 1649 to 1668 for mechanics and finally general for mathematics until his death. In addition to his mathematical studies Mengoli acquired in 1650 a Doctor of Philosophy and three years later a Doctor of Laws. The reception of his work was made difficult by its unconventional use of Latin.

In 1644 Mengoli the first to formulate the Basel problem that was solved in 1735 by Leonhard Euler.

Mengoli demonstrated in an essay from 1650 that the alternating harmonic series is the limit ln ( 2).

Moreover, he proved that the harmonic series diverges, and formulated a proof of the correctness of Wallis 's product for the calculation of the circle number.

In 1659 published Mengoli the font Geometriae speciosae elementary, published with a suggestion for the 1684 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Acta Eruditorum was.
