Pietro Riario

Pietro Riario, OFM Conv (* April 21, 1445 in Savona, † January 3, 1474 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Pietro was a son of the wealthy craftsman Paolo Riario and Bianca Beccalla. After the speedy death of the father Bianca della Rovere, sister of the Franciscan Francesco della Rovere (1471-1484 Pope Sixtus IV ) and aunt of Pope Julius II married early. Orphaned, Pietro joined the Minorit and studied in Pavia, Padua, Bologna and made Rome his master's degree in theology. In 1470 he was ordained a priest in 1471 commissioned by its newly elected Pope Sixtus IV uncle with foreign policy. Without ever receive episcopal consecration, became Pietro Riario highest ecclesiastical offices with immense income:

As Kardinalnepote and Foreign Minister of the Pope, he led the life of a Renaissance prince with sumptuous receptions and banquets, built for you the Palazzo dei Santi Apostoli ( with library) and organized games for the Roman people. Politically strengthened the alliance between Rome and Milan by his brother Girolamo married to the daughter of the Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza. In 1473 he traveled to northern Italy to secure the assignment of Imola from Milan to the Republic of Florence. Only twenty-eight died Riario in 1474 after a brief suffering from delayed gastric cancer detected. He was buried in the Basilica Santi Apostoli.
