Pietro Tonolo

Pietro Tonolo (born 30 May 1959 Mirano ) is an Italian jazz saxophonist.

Tonolo completed a classical violin training before he came to Milan in 1979 and switched to saxophone and jazz. He worked here with Franco D' Andrea, Luigi Bonafede, Gianni Cazzola, Larry Nocella, Massimo Urbani and 1981-1986 regularly with the band by Enrico Rava. In the summer of 1982 he played in the Gil Evans Orchestra with musicians such as Steve Lacy, Lew Soloff and Ray Anderson.

Since 1983, he has toured throughout Europe and the United States, partly as a leader of his own formations, some as a sideman for Kenny Clarke, Roswell Rudd, Sal Nistico, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, John Surman, George Lewis, Barry Altschul, Joe Chambers, Aldo Romano, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Tony Oxley and others.

From 1986, he worked with pianist Rita Marcotulli together as a duo and in a quartet with Enzo and Roberto Gatto Pietropaoli. In 1988, he joined with Henri Texier's band played in France, Italy, Mexico, Cuba and Egypt. He also worked with Enrico Pieranunzi and Giovanni Tommaso, the Keptorchestra and the saxophone quartet Arundo donax, and as head of several separate formations with Piero Leveratto, Sandro Gibellini, Alfred Kramer and Roberto Rossi.
