Pietro Torri

Pietro Torri (* 1650 in Peschiera del Garda, † July 6, 1737 in Munich) was an Italian composer.

Life

From 1684 to 1688 he served as organist to the Margrave of Bayreuth, to then find in the service of the Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria employment. In 1692 he follows his masters with a part of the court orchestra in the Spanish Netherlands, and settled with him in Brussels. Here Torri married the daughter of the ballet master François Rodier.

During this time he lingered in Mons, Namur, Lille, Valenciennes and Compiègne, where some of his operas were performed.

1715 his return to Munich, and here he composed cantatas opportunity and an opera annually. 1726 dies Max Emanuel and Karl Albrecht followed him on the throne of the Elector of Bavaria Wittelsbach. On this occasion, Torri composed as a musical homage to the new ruler the allegorical cantata La Baviera. In this work, the Bavarian claim is already paid homage to the imperial throne, and represents the self-understanding of the dynasty. During his stay in Munich in 1729, the famous castrato Farinelli sang a solo part of the opera Nicomede.

Only after the death of Giuseppe Antonio Bernabei Torri officially received the post of Bavarian court Kapellmeister.

Works

In addition to around 50 operas Torri composed serenades, oratorios, psalms, Torneos, cantatas, and a Te Deum for Max Emanuel; after the Peace of Rastatt in 1715 he created the work Triomphe de la paix.
