Pike County (Alabama)

The Pike County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Troy.

Geography

The County is located in the central southeastern part of Alabama, is in the east about 100 km from Georgia, located in the south about 110 miles from Florida's northern border and has an area of ​​1741 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bullock County, Barbour County, Dale County, Coffee County, Crenshaw County and Montgomery County.

History

Pike County was formed on 17 December 1821. It was named for General Zebulon Pike, a soldier in the War of 1812. The first county seat was Louisville, later Monticello and finally in 1839 Troy. The first public school, the Troy Normal School, was founded in 1887.
