The Pili (pronounced Pilisch ) or Pilisgebirge is the easternmost part of the Hungarian Central Mountains.

Location

It lies on the western side of the Danube between Budapest and Esztergom in the counties of Pest and Komárom -Esztergom. The main peak is 756 m high mountain Pili. The mountain is shared by Kétbükkfa - nyereg ( " Two Book - saddle" ) and the Szentlélek - patak Valley ( " Holy Ghost Bach" valley).

Erroneously, the neighboring Visegrad mountains in the colloquial language is often referred to as part of the Pili, geographically speaking, however, belongs already to the northern Hungarian Central Mountains.

The name of the Central Mountains derives from the ancient word for tonsure, meaning in Hungarian pilis. Thus, the previously bald mountain summit was called.

In the Middle Ages it was part of the famous Buda wine region. The grapes were planted on the treeless slopes of Pili. Today's forests arose later.
