Pilosocereus azulensis is a flowering plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet refers to the type locality in the National Park Pedra Azul.

Description

Pilosocereus azulensis grows tree-like or shrubby, branched above the base and reaches stature heights of up to 10 meters. The smooth, olive-green to glauken shoots have diameters from 8 to 9.5 centimeters. There are 6 to 12 ribs present, which sometimes have transverse furrows. The areoles located on it are 5-7 millimeters apart. The opaque, slender spines are yellowish brown. The 1-11 ascending to projecting central spines are 0.5 to 4 inches long. The 8-12 outstretched spines are 3 to 13 millimeters long. A blühfähiger part of the shoots is hardly pronounced. The flowerable areoles located on 1-3 ribs at the top of the shoots, or just below it. From them spring from white to gray hair by up to 3 inches in length.

The wide-opening flowers are pale green on the outside. They are 5.5 to 6.7 inches long and have diameters from 4.7 to 7 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter from 4.2 to 6 centimeters, tear side and contain a magenta flesh.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Pilosocereus azulensis is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the municipality of Pedra Azul. The first description was published in 1997 by Nigel Paul Taylor and Daniela Zappi Cristina ( b. 1965 ).

Pilosocereus azulensis is on the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN as " Critically Endangered (CR ) ', ie threatened with extinction, classified.
