Pilosocereus floccosus

Pilosocereus floccosus is a flowering plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet floccosus means fully flakes, flaky, flaked '.

Description

Pilosocereus floccosus growing shrubby or tree-like with a distinct stem, sometimes branched above the base and reaches heights of growth 1-5 meters. The upright, gray-green shoots are finely roughened and have diameters of 5-11 centimeters. There are 4 to 8 ribs available. The opaque spines are initially yellowish brown or reddish and greyish later. The 3-6 rising to projecting central spines are 0.8 to 2.5 cm (rarely to 5 centimeters ) long. The ascending to spread 5 to 16 radial spines are 2 to 25 millimeters long. The flowering size of the drives is very pronounced. It is formed near the tip of the shoot close to a ring cephalienartig. From the areoles there spring 1.5 to 2 inches long, light brown or gray, woolly hair and up to 3.5 centimeters long bristles.

The wide-opening flowers are 4-5 inches long and can reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. The depressed spherical or laterally compressed fruits have diameters 3-5 centimeters, tear on the side near the base or near their peak and included a bright red pulp.

Systematics, distribution and hazard

Pilosocereus floccosus is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The first description was published by Ronald Stewart Gordon Douglas Byles and Rowley 1957.

We distinguish the following sub- types:

  • Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. floccosus
  • Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. quadricostatus

Pilosocereus floccosus and the subspecies Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. floccosus were in the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) ", ie Threatened and subspecies Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. quadricostatus as " Vulnerable (VU) ", that is, compromised classified. After the revision of the list in 2013 is the type as "Least Concern ( LC) ," ie, as not done at risk and excluded the two subspecies from the list.
