PIN pad

The Encrypting PIN Pad ( EPP, " Encrypting PIN keypad ") is a special keyboard to enter the personal identification number (PIN) at ATMs, POS terminals and transfer terminals.

This keyboard together with a hardware encryption a unit, thus avoiding that the PIN ever gets unencrypted in the outside world. Already in the software of the ATM will only work with an encrypted PIN, and certainly this is true of course for the forwarding of requests on network connections. Only in the central computer of the bank, the PIN is checked by means of stored master key there.

Since key for security reasons are valid for a limited period, there is a method called online personalization of terminals ( OPT ) to distribute keys in a secure manner at terminals and in particular in their EPPs.
