Pinacoteca Nazionale (Siena)

The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena is an art gallery in Siena, Italy, and includes important works from the 14th, 15th and 16th century as well as international masterpieces in the Spannocchi collection.

History

The Art Gallery was inaugurated in 1932 and has since remained in the city Terzo di Città third in the buildings of Palazzo Brigidi and Palazzo Buonsignori in Via San Pietro 29 The latter dates from the 15th century and had as an architectural model of the Palazzo Pubblico. On March 4, 1915 Niccolò Bonobligo handed to erect the building of the local provincial administration with the condition that in a museum or an art gallery as the last owner of the palace Buonsignori. By decree of 15 May 1930, the move to the Via San Pietro was decided. Due to lack of space while the Palazzo Brigidi was connected, it dates from the 14th century and served as the residence of the Pannocchieschi family.

The art collection originates mainly the Accademia di belle arti di Siena ( Academy of Fine Arts), the (now Via della Sapienza, there is the library there today ) was founded on 26 September 1816 by Giovanni Bianchi in Via degli belle arti and 90 works contained. This had its origins in the art collection of the monks Ciaccheri Giuseppe and Luigi de Angelis, who collected the works of 1750-1810. De Angelis made ​​a first attempt to catalog the collection. 1847 commissioned Alessandro Serafini, president of the Academy, the specialist Carlo Pini with the restructuring of the collection to fix the numerous errors De Angelis and achieve a chronological order. Later, the collection was expanded by some works of the Pilgrims Hospice of Santa Maria della Scala. In the 19th century it was not until the property of the Comune di Siena and 1864 it was the province of Siena assumed that they renamed Galleria Provinciale delle belle arti, 1866. Under the direction of Cesare Brandi, the collection for the first time fully cataloged, they moved to the Via San Pietro and first received the name Regia Pinacoteca di Siena, then later its current name.

Art Collection

The building has four floors, the ground floor is used only as an entrance area and offices and service rooms. Here is a sarcophagus of the Etruscan and a door of the ruined convent of Olivetans at the city gate Porta Tufi.

On the first floor the works of the 16th century are on display. In Room 22 is located in the Sacra famiglia by Girolamo da Sermoneta Siciolante (* 1521 in Sermoneta, † 1580 ) and Il paradiso by Bartolomeo Neroni ( Il Riccio called ). Room 23 contains several works by Pietro di Francesco Orioli. Hall 26 is dedicated to sculptures, including a number of Gano di Fazio (also called Gano as Siena, active 1290-1318 ), Redentore benedicente, Episodi della vita del beato Gioacchino Piccolomini, marble sculptures). Halls 27 to 32 show works by Sodoma, Domenico Beccafumi, Girolamo del Pacchia and Marco Pino. In the halls of 33 to 36 works from the 17th century also be shown. Among them are paintings by Domenico Manetti, Rutilio Manetti, Bernardino Mei ( Ghismunda ), Francesco Nasini, Astolfo Petrazzi, Pietro Sorri and Raffaello Vanni. In addition, to visit the first floor works by Ventura Salimbeni and his father Arcangelo Salimbeni (Madonna Incoronata all'eterno, Room 22 ).

The second floor contains the older works from the 14th and 15th centuries. The halls 1-2 show works by Guido da Siena and artists from his era, the halls 3 and 4 deal with Duccio di Buoninsegna and works of his students, the halls 5 and 6 are devoted to Simone Martini and the artists of his time. In Room 7 there are paintings of the Lorenzetti brothers Pietro and Ambrogio. In Room 12 and Room 13 are more than 15 works by Giovanni di Paolo. Neroccio di Bartolomeo di Benedetto de ' Landi and Matteo di Giovanni are on display in Room 14. Room 15 shows images of the lesser-known artist Pietro di Domenico da Montepulciano and Bernardino Fungai. Sano di Pietro is represented by several works in hall 16 and 17. In the last room of the floor (Room 19) there are paintings by Girolamo di Benvenuto, Benvenuto di Giovanni present ( Ascensione di Cristo, 1491 ) and Il Vecchietta. The second floor also houses works by Luca di Tommè ( Gesù in casa del fariseo, Hall 5), Bartolomeo Bulgarini (including Maestro d' Ovile and Ugolino Lorenzetti called San Galgano e San Ansano, Hall 7), Paolo di Giovanni Fei and Bernardo Daddi (Madonna col Bambino, Natività e Crocifissione, hall 9).

The third floor serves since 1977 as an exhibition space of Spannocchi Collection ( Collezione Spannocchi ), which significantly differs from the Senese artists and is dedicated to the North Italian and international artists. Located here are paintings by Albrecht Dürer and Lorenzo Lotto. The complete collection is divided into two parts, the first and still unexplored part, is located in the Palazzo Pubblico, the second in the Pinacoteca Nazionale. The older part of the collection seems to have been contributed by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the origin seems to come from its activities in 1460 in Mantua and Gonzaga. After that, the collection went through inheritances and marriages in the family Spannocchi - Piccolomini on. Source of documentation of provenance is a font of Abbot Girolamo Carli from the 18th century, which is located in the Biblioteca Comunale Intronati a Siena. 1835, the collection of the family Spannocchi to the Academy delle Belle Arti was passed.
