General

Pine Creek is located on the Stuart Highway, the main highway linking Adelaide with Darwin. Some events are organized annually in Pine Creek to popularize the place in the region. Mostly it involves racing or rodeo events.

History

The village was founded in 1870 during the construction of the Trans- Australian telegraph line that connected Darwin and Adelaide with the submarine cables to Indonesia and Europe. After a worker took place in 1871 when digging a hole for a mast of the line gold, broke a gold rush in Australia.

Later, the place was for a time the first terminus of the Northern Australian Railway, which was called until 1911 Palmerston and Pine Creek Railway.

During the Second World War, the Australian Army established the 65th Australian Camp Hospital near Pine Creek. In addition, the U.S. Army in 1942 put here an airfield in for emergency landings and to supply the soldiers in Pine Creek. Unlike most places in the Top End Pine Creek was not bombed by Japanese planes.
