Pinetown is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu -Natal. It is located 16 km west of Durban at an altitude 305-395 meters above sea level. 2011, it had 144 026 inhabitants.

History

The city was created in 1850 around the Wayside Hotel; the hotel itself had been a year earlier built on the connecting road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. The city was named after the Governor of the former Colony of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine, named.
