Pingback

Pingback is a method that allows Web authors to request notification using an XML -RPC, as soon as someone linked their documents or pages. This allows authors to track who links to their sites or cited portions thereof.

In fact, it is more of a listening than a request: First, the opposite side Pingback must support. Some weblog software packages (such as WordPress), proceed as follows: When publishing a blog entry all listed therein Links are automatically notified ( pinged see Blogping ). The listening side takes this ping, checks on the sending side, the existence of the link and then executes it within themselves to (possibly with a text excerpt of the linked post).

Semantic Pingback

For use in the publication of RDF resources with Linked Data, the pingback protocol was adapted and extended. Not only can untyped hyperlinks, but also any other mentions of a resource in an RDF description can be pinged. In addition to the XML -RPC ping with a simple HTTP POST request was specified. A use case for Semantic Pingback is to know in a semantic social network. Here, a person is informed as soon as another person is added as a friend.
