Pinnow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Pinnow is a town east of the state capital Schwerin. It is administered by the Office Crivitz based in Crivitz. Near the town there is an airfield.

Geography and transport

Pinnow is located near the eastern shore of Lake Schwerin, east of Pinnower Lake and west of the river Warnow. Within the area are the Pinnower Kiessee and a Kiessee at Pinnow expansion caused by gravel mining, two other large bodies of water. By Pinnow flows the Bietnitz, more rivers are next to the river Warnow in the east and the mill stream in the north. In the municipality Pinnow there is a nature reserve and dry slopes on both sides of the Petersberg airfield Pinnow. The highest elevations in the municipality reach 75 m above sea level. History

Pinnow was mentioned in 1265, first documented as Pinnowe. The place name is derived from the old Slavic word for tree trunk Pini and means place where logs are or Waldort. In 1315 Pinnow fell to the monastery Rehna. In the 14th century the church was built as early Gothic brick. At the end of the Thirty Years' War Pinnow burned down and became a deserted village. From this setback, the community recovered only very slowly. From 1815 to 1918 Pinnow belonged to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg -Schwerin, from 1919 to 1933 for the Free State of Mecklenburg -Schwerin and 1934-1952 for the state of Mecklenburg. After 1952 Pinnow came to the district of Schwerin - land in the district of Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1990. On the southeast shore of Lake Pinnower emerged in the 1950s, an extended weekend resort. Near Petersberg the airfield was built. Its proximity to the state capital Schwerin and the scenic location several large residential areas emerged after 1990 in the village.

Effective 1 January 2012 Godern was incorporated into Pinnow.
