Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore

Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore is a municipality with 222 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Varese, in the Lombardy region in Italy.

Location

The municipality is situated on a rocky outcrop, the Sasso di Pino, on the east side of Lake Maggiore, and is bordered to the north by Switzerland. The neighboring municipalities are Tronzano Lago Maggiore, Maccagno and Veddasca in Italy, and Caviano, Gerra, San Nazzaro and Sant'Abbondio in Switzerland.

History

The free commune Pino was in the High Middle Ages belonged to the counts of Seprio and came under the rule of the Milanese Visconti later. This is connected to the territory of the Quattro Valli (Four Valleys ) and gave it 1439 the Rusca family feud. In 1583 it became a fief of the Marliani who kept their Podestà to 1600.

In the past, the place of agriculture and forestry lived. From the turn of the century Pino became the resort, and some stately mansions from the early 1900's still dominate the village image. Today the economy is based almost entirely on tourism.

Attractions

  • The parish church of San Quirico e Giulitta is Romanesque and Baroque style in the 16th century and about 1780.
  • The Church Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie at Zenna was built in 1600.
  • The Chapel Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is attested since the 13th century. The Romanesque facade is not obtained.
  • In a tower of the 13th century, remains of a medieval fortress, now home to the post office.
