Piombino

Piombino is a town in the Italian province of Livorno with 34,320 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). The city center with its historical elements from the Middle Ages to modern times as an ensemble almost completely preserved. Multiple fortification elements such as a city gate with barbican are partly well preserved. From a distance, however, Piombino makes a modern impression, as much industry has settled there. In particular, the routes with its own port on the seafront opposite Lucchini ironworks with coke plant, two blast furnaces (but only one is active), oxygen steelworks and various rolling mills dominated the view.

Geography

The municipality covers an area of 129 km ². Piombino is located at the Gulf towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Elba. It belongs to the Maremma ( Maremma Livornese ). To the north of Piombino lie on olivenbepflanzter, steep sloping hill towards the sea, the ruins of the ancient Etruscan maritime trading Populonia with harbor (Porto Baratti ), to the east, the Maremma expands. History

The port of Porto Felesia dates back to Roman times. After the destruction of Populonia by the Lombards the place gained as importance and was equipped by Pisa in the 12th and 13th century city walls. The place wwurde 1399 together with Elba by Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan awarded to you for the betrayal of Pisa to Gherardo Appiano and fixed more of this. Piombino was since 1594 the capital of the Principality of Piombino, which also included a large part of the island of Elba and 360 km ² counted 25,000 residents.   • Cathedral of Piombino (Duomo di Piombino, also Concattedrale di Sant 'Antimo called ), Co-Cathedral in the center. Originated in 1377 by Piero Gamba Corti at will.
