Pioneer 5

Pioneer 5 was a spacecraft of the U.S. Space Agency NASA as part of the Pioneer program. Pioneer 5 was designed to test new technologies and investigate interplanetary space.

Construction

Originally it was planned to conduct the probe a flyby of Venus. NASA then decided, however, for a mission to investigate interplanetary space. Pioneer 5 had a spherical shape with 66 cm diameter. After deployment of the solar panels had a span of 140 cm. She weighed 43.2 kg, 18.2 kg of which was attributable to the instruments on board. The probe had a number of instruments on board, including a Geiger counter, a search lobe magnetometer, a micrometeorite detector and a proportional counter. Communication took place over a 5 -watt or 150 -watt transmitter, the 5 - watt transmitter worked as a preamplifier for the 150 - watt transmitter.

Mission

After starting Pioneer 5 was placed in a heliocentric orbit between Venus and the Earth's orbit. On April 30, there were initial problems with data transmission. On 26 June 1960, the contact with the probe broke off final. They had the last time contact with her from a distance of 36.2 million kilometers. Up to Mariner 2, this set represents a record

Results

The mission was a complete success. Pioneer 5 was designed for a service life of approximately 1 month, which they called surpassed more. The new technologies, including the first time a digital data transmission have been successfully tested. In addition, the existence of an interplanetary magnetic field was confirmed. In addition, the probe solar storm particles could be detected.
