Piper Aerostar

The Piper PA -60 Aerostar is an American, twin-engined light business and transport aircraft, developed by Ted Smith Aircraft Company, which after 1978 became part of the Piper Aircraft Corporation.

Development

Ted Smith flew the first Aerostar 600 in October 1967. It was a monoplane with two attached to the wings Lycoming piston engines.

Was also flown a version with turbocharging, the Aerostar 601

The aircraft were built in Van Nuys, California, when the company was bought by the "American Cement Company " in 1968. However, the takeover was not a success and the company was sold again in 1969 to Butler Aviation back. The new company was named Aerostar Aircraft Corporation and the aircraft were then produced in Kerrville, Texas.

1972 Ted Smith bought all rights to the plane back so that he could produce more Aero Stars, he also introduced the Aerostar 601P. The 601P had engines with more powerful turbo-chargers for the pressurized cabin. Another variant was the stretched Aerostar 700 Superstar.

In 1976, the company in Ted Smith Aerostar Corporation was renamed.

In 1978 the company was taken over by the Piper Aircraft Corporation, which continued to produce three variants ( 600A, 601B and 600P ) and later led the 601P and 602P versions (also known as Sequoya ) again. After cessation of production of models unpressurised Piper moved production to Vero Beach, where the last Aerostar was produced in 1984.
