As Pippinids the earliest known members of the later Carolingian Frankish mentioned ruling family are called.
Overview
The center of power Pippinids lay in Austrasia, north of the Ardennes, where they had extensive land and numerous clients. Namesake and at the same time the oldest known representative is Pippin the Elder. He allowed the family to put the house Meier in the kingdom of the Merovingians, and thus to overthrow the actual ruling family. The Wedding of Pippin's daughter Begga with Arnulf Inger Ansegisel, the son of Arnulf of Metz Pippin's closest ally, his policy secured from family also politically.
After Pepin's death, his son sat Grimoald the Elder not only as his successor by, but even managed the then childless king Sigebert III. to get them to adopt his, Grimoalds, Son, and to appoint as heirs - as Childebertus adoptivus, his real name is unknown, he was recognized by Sigibert death of the Austrasian barons to ensure a smooth change of government, even with a change of the ruling family of alternative preferred to be from the ruling in Neustria Sigibert brother, Clovis II, taken and posted on the sidelines. Clovis, however, looked Grimoalds activities as " coup " had put him caught in an ambush and executed in Paris in the dungeon.
Childebert was able to keep in Austrasia on the throne, but died in 662 probably of natural causes, and thus reversed the father and grandfather policy and the Pippinids in the male line total to an abrupt end. Heir to the throne was Clovis's son Childeric II, heir to extensive family property Arnulf Inger, especially their common son of Pippin the Middle, which it was not until 18 years later, the sudden fall from power were his aunt Begga and her husband Ansegisel again compensate.
