Piqua is a city in Miami County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,738 at the Census United States Census 2000. Statistically It is a part of the metropolitan area of Dayton. Piqua was one of the towns that were affected by the flood Great Dayton Flood 1913.

Geography

Piqua is located on the Great Miami River in the western part of Ohio. Interstate 75 connects the city with Dayton and Toledo in the south to the north.

History

In the area at the upper Great Miami River settled in prehistoric times members of the Adena and Hopewell culture. In the middle of the 18th century was located near the present city of a settlement of the Miami Indians, and from 1749 to 1752 a trading post called Pickawillany. A second settlement phase began in 1780 when a group of Shawnees had to abandon their villages on the Mad River. They brought to their new homes in the Miami Valley with the ancient place names and called their settlements Upper Piqua (Bi -co -we- that) and Lower Piqua ( Chillicothe ).

Instead of the village of Upper Piqua General Anthony Wayne in 1793 erected a fort in 1796 settled with Joe Gard, the first white settlers down. 1807 got the place under the name Washington the status of a village, but the name was not well received, and in 1816 the original name Shawnee Piqua was reintroduced. 1823 were about 350 people lived here. In 1837 Piqua was due to its location on the Miami - Erie Canal, a transport and trade center, from 1858, the place was also connected to the railway.

In Piqua is a nuclear power plant, which produced 1963-1965 stream before it was shut down due to cooling problems. It was the first municipally run NPP in the USA.

Economy and infrastructure

Piqua is known for the production of underwear and has 16 plants that produce these textiles. The place has also been referred to as the underwear capital of the world, which is still celebrated with a Great Outdoor Underwear Day. further in Piqua, the manufacturer of aircraft propellers, the Hartzell Propeller Inc. is home. North of town is the smaller airfield Piqua Airport ( Hartzell Field), the nearest major airport is Dayton International Airport in Dayton.
