Pirimiphos -methyl is a chemical compound from the group of Thiophosphoric.
Production and representation
Pirimiphos -methyl can be obtained by reaction of N, N- Diethylguanidin with acetoacetic ester and reaction of the resulting intermediate with O, O- Dimethylphosphorchlorthioat.
Properties
Pirimiphos -methyl is a liquid which is practically insoluble in water. Pirimiphos-methyl is broken down very quickly in the environment, measured with a half-life in days. The mechanisms are volatilization and photodegradation.
Use
Pirimiphos -methyl is used as an active ingredient in pesticides. Pirimiphos -methyl is a by post-harvest insecticide that is used in the U.S. in embedded maize, millet and seeds. It is used for the control of various insects such as mealybugs and mites, flies ( in cattle ) and cigarette beetles, flour beetles, Flat Grain beetles, moths ( corn and wheat ) and others. The chemically related ethyl derivative ( pirimiphos -ethyl, CAS: 23505-41-1 ) is also used as an insecticide. Pirimiphos - methyl has been approved in the U.S. in 1978 as an insecticide and in 2006 were about 12,000 pounds ( 5.4 t). It acts by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase.
Pirimiphos -methyl was approved in 2007 in the European Union as an insecticide for use on embedded crop. In Germany and Switzerland pesticides are approved with this drug, in Austria not.
