Pirot District

Okrug Pirot (Serbian Пиротски округ / Pirotski okrug ) is an administrative district in the southeast of Serbia, to the east by Bulgaria.

It consists of the following municipalities ( opstine ):

Population

This district has, according to the 2002 census, a population of 105 654. The region is the center of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia, some of which represents the majority in the border communities. The main administrative center is the city of Pirot.

  • Bulgarians = 7,313 (6.92 %)
  • Roma = 3,344 ( 3.17% )
  • Rest = 5,012 ( 4.74% )

History

The name Pirot was first mentioned in the 2nd century on the ancient Roman map. The attractions of this district are the " Church of Sts. Peter " from the 13th century and the monastery Poganovo from the late 14th century.

The healing waters of the spa resort Banja Zvornjačka have already been discovered in the ancient world. The large pristine natural areas of this district are well-known in Serbia.

Economy

The economic focus of the area form the rubber factory " Tigar ", the textile factory " Prvi Maj " and the paint and varnish factory " Suko ".
