Pisogne

Pisogne is a town in the Italian province of Brescia, in Lombardy. The town has 8132 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and is located at 198 m asl

Geography

The municipality is situated on the north- eastern end of Lake Iseo, where the Valcamonica flows into the lake. It belongs to the Mountain Community ( Comunità montana) Sebino Bresciano. After the southern Iseo on the eastern shore of the lake is about 24 km, the provincial capital of Brescia is about 44 km south.

Fractions ( districts ) of the community are Fraine, Gratacasolo, Grignaghe, Sommo, Palot, Sonvico, Siniga, Toline Pontasio and Passabocche.

The neighboring municipalities are Artogne, Castro ( BG), Costa Volpino (BG), Lovere (BG), Marone, Pezzaze, Pian Camuno, Sarnico (BG), Solto Collina (BG), Tavernole sul Mella and zone.

History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages Pisogne was an important trading center between the Camonica valley and Lake Iseo. In the 12th century the town was destroyed, rebuilt and fortified with walls and towers. The current townscape of the center comes mainly from the 17th century, and is characterized by the construction of arches and palaces. Since 1907, Pisogne is connected to the railway network.

Attractions

  • Worth seeing is the church of Santa Maria della Neve with frescoes by Girolamo Romanino. They were created 1532-1534 and show the suffering of Jesus. The church of Santa Maria in Silvis also contains frescoes from the late 15th century, including a representation of the dance of death.
  • Also located in the center of the Episcopal tower ( Torre del Vescovo ) and remnants of the old city gates.
