Etymology

The word is of French origin and is composed of the verb pisser ( " pee " ) and the suffix - oir (from the Latin - Orium - the place where something happens). In French, even though these places are vespasienne called ( after the Roman Emperor Vespasian ).

As in 1834, the prefect Claude- Philibert de Rambuteau built the first public urinals in Paris, they were called by the opposition mockingly colonne Rambuteau ( pillar of Rambuteau ). Rambuteau then launched the official name colonne vespasienne ( vespasianische column ). There also exist the names urinoir and - somewhat less maintained - pissetière. The word urinal there is in French as well, but it means something else.
