The Pistol River and its catchment area
It flows from its origin at Sugarloaf Mountain in the Siskiyou National Forest in a generally southwesterly direction to its mouth at the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint, 16 km south of Gold Beach. The river got its name because of the pioneer James Mace 1853 in the river lost his gun.
The Pistol River live populations of chinook salmon, coho salmon, rainbow trout and Cutthroatforelle. The river runs largely through forest areas, where logging has damaged the habitat of the fish. Therefore, work is underway to restore the habitat.
Run
At the upper reaches in the Siskiyou National Forest, the river first flows southward and receives from the left Meadow Creek and East Fork Pistol River, before it turns to the southwest and opens from the right of the North Fork Pistol River. About 18 km upstream of the confluence with the ocean opens from the left of the Sunrise Creek, then proposes the Pistol River a western direction. From left to flow South Fork Pistol River, and then, about eight kilometers above the mouth, in rapid succession, each of the right Deep Creek and Glade Creek. The Crook Creek joins as a right tributary in the village of Pistol River with the river, where the waters under the Pistol River Loop Highway and U.S. Highway 101 is passed through it before it empties into the Pacific Ocean.
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Pistol River covers about 272 km ² and lies entirely within Curry County Oregon. In 2001, 57% of the catchment area of public land were under the supervision of United States Forest Service ( 52%) and Bureau of Land Management ( 5%), the rest was in private hands. The forest was the dominant land use, private and public forests covered about 97 % of the catchment area. The remaining three percent of the land distributed to farming, grazing and settlement areas.
