Pitomnik Airfield

Pitomnik was one of three airfields in the so-called Stalingrad. He served after the encirclement of the 6th Army by Soviet forces beside the airfield Basargino and the airstrip Gumrak to supply flights by the Air Force.

These flights to and from Stalingrad during the battle of encirclement, a total of 550 aircraft lost. This is about one third of the machines used. Nevertheless, the supply for the trapped soldiers at no time was sufficient.

The Pitomnik airfield fell into Soviet hands on 16 January 1943. After a fly out from the boiler only on the airstrip Gumrak was possible.

The airport no longer exists. Are agricultural land in his place.
