Pitsunda

Pizunda ( Abkhaz Пиҵунда / Pizzunda; Russian Пицунда / Pizunda; Georgian ბიჭვინთა / Bitschwinta ) is a town in Abkhazia, which is known as Black Sea resort and tourist destination. It belongs to Rajon Gagra.

Geographical location

Pizunda is located on a cape of the same name in the Black Sea about 25 km southeast of Gagra. The place is surrounded by pine forests, which extend as far to the coast. Unlike other places, the Black Sea coast is in Pizunda from the sandy beach.

History

The first settlement on the Cape Pizunda originated in the 4th century BC The city later Pitius here was founded by the Greeks. Around the turn of the 2nd from the 1st century AD the city became part of the Kingdom of Pontos.

Towards the end of the 2nd century was Pityus border city of the Roman Empire and until the middle of the 3rd century garrison of the Legio XV Apollinaris.

In the year 780 the city as Pitiunt part of the Kingdom of Abkhazia. From the 14th to the 15th century there was a Genoese trading colony Pizonda. From the 17th to the 18th century, the city was under Ottoman rule. In the 19th century, together with Pizunda was quite Abkhazia part of Russia and in this way and later the Soviet Union.

In the Soviet Union Pizunda had the status of an urban-type settlement. As a health resort it won from 1960 to importance. Many new buildings were built and, decimated the pine forests that prevailed here. Directly on the beach seven 14 to 15 storey high apartment houses were built. The building boom in Pizunda continued in the following years.

Since the end of the Soviet Union is Pizunda part of the de facto independent republic of Abkhazia, although the international community, the region majority still regards as part of Georgia. 2007 Pizunda became a town.

Attractions

One of the most important examples of medieval architecture in Abkhazia is the Patriarchal Cathedral of Pizunda the Georgian Orthodox Church of the Apostles.

Traffic

Due to its location on a promontory Pizunda located about 6 km southwest of the most important Abkhaz road link through the land to its full length ( part of the Georgian S 1) and the main railway Abkhazia.
