Piveteausaurus

Hypothetical reconstruction of Piveteausaurus divesensis

  • Europe (France )
  • Piveteausaurus divesensis

Piveteausaurus is a genus theropod dinosaur that lived during the Middle Jurassic in Europe about 162 million years. It is known only to the species P. divesensis.

The fossil record is limited to a complete braincase ( neurocranium ), which was found in Marnes de Dives in the French department of Calvados. The skull has similarities with that of Allosaurus, but the bone ridges above the eyes were less pronounced in Piveteausaurus and his skull was longer. According to estimates he was about four feet high, 11 feet long and weighed about two tons.

Philippe Taquet and Samuel Paul Welles classified to 1977, the first in 1964 divesensis described by Alick Walker Eustreptospondylus kind. The Style epithet referred Marnes de Dives, the locality in France. The exact taxonomic classification is controversial because of the meager finds. Partial Piveteausaurus will be provided to Carnosauria, by other authors to the Megalosauridae. A relationship with the Ornitholestidae is also discussed.
