Life and work

Pixinguinha comes from a musical family; his father Alfredo da Rocha Viana was flutist. After first flute lessons from his father, he was taught by Irineu de Almeida; his first compositions he wrote at age 14. Even as a 15 -year-old he appeared with his flute to wherever their elders made music so that he described as " rogue " (, pinzinguim ') was scolded, from which derives his nickname. In 1912 he began to work professionally as a musician in the revues, cinemas and cabarets. Since 1919, he starred in the octet Oito Batutas, with whom he eventually expanded the traditional choro instrumentation of two guitars, cavaquinho and flute to the timbres of saxophone, trumpet and other wind instruments and percussion instruments such as Reco -reco, pandeiro and Ganzá. He also established the counterpoint as the basis for the choro and its improvisations.

1922 Pixinguinha performed with the Os Batutas that emerged from the ensemble, on in Europe; to play in larger halls, he switches on the soprano saxophone. 1930 sparked Pixinguinha to the orchestra and focused mainly on the career as a composer, arranger and leader of Studio Orchestra Orquestra Victor Brasileira. His compositions have been made famous by artists such as Francisco Alves and Mário Reis.

In 1939 he became a member of the group of Benedito Lacerda, where he focused on the tenor saxophone (and thus the second voice ) concentrated. In the 1940s he was involved in recordings of Brazilian music, which were initiated by Leopold Stokowski for Columbia Records. Despite the recognition by colleagues and friends Pixinguinha could only rarely occur in the last two decades, as the choro was barely noticed more. In 1963, he co-wrote with Vinicius de Moraes the music for the feature film sol sobre a Lama.
