PKP class ET40

The locomotives of the series ET40 Polish State Railways ( PKP) are two-piece electric locomotives to haul freight trains. A locomotive was converted to EP40.

Series ET40

The ET40 is designed as a double locomotives of two identical halves, each with a driving cab. The two Lokhälften marked to distinguish as "A" and "B". The ET40 has similarities to the series EU05, which was delivered in 1961 by Škoda to the PKP, but in one-piece design.

The ET40 Series was built by Škoda. From 1975 to 1978 60 locomotives were delivered to the PKP.

2004 there were still 46 ET40 in stock. All ET40 are located in the depot Bydgoszcz and mainly in freight transport on the north- south route between the Upper Silesian Industrial Region and the Baltic ports of Gdansk and Gdynia in use.

Series EP40

After delivery of the prototypes of the series EP09 for a top speed of 160 km / h for use on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa Warschau-Krakau/Katowice was considered as an alternative to the conversion of the Series ET40 on the series EP40. 1990 ET40 -41 rebuilt by changing the transmission for EP40 -41 using components of the series EP05 ( for 160 km / h converted version of the EU05 series ) were used. The conversion was carried out by PKP in the repair shop ( ZNTK ) Gdańsk. ET40 -41 received the standard for high-speed locomotives PKP orange paint.

The PKP gave the series production of the series EP09 priority. Further modifications were not made, EP40 - 41 was built in 1993 back to ET40 -41.
