PKP class SM48

The locomotives of the series SM48 Polish State Railways ( PKP ), diesel locomotives for the carriage of freight trains and for shunting.

SM48 series of PKP

Since 1960 ( Soviet Union) diesel-electric locomotives of the series ТЭМ2 for the Soviet Railways ( SZD ) were built in the Bryansk Engineering Plant in Bryansk. Since 1974 they have been delivered under the name TEM2 to Polish industrial railways. The PKP received this type in 1976 and designated it as a series SM48. The built locomotives for PKP differ from the series ТЭМ2 by a slightly shorter length of 16,970 instead of 17 029 mm.

From 1976 to 1978 86 SM48 were built. Another built in 1982 TEM2 from industry stocks came in 1983 as SM48 -087 to the PKP. Only in 1987 and 1988 received the PKP another 43 SM48. Part of the SM48 was (1524 mm gauge ) for the Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa between Slawkow ( at Będzin ) and the border with the Soviet Union ( now Ukraine) procured in the Soviet broad-gauge in Hrubieszów.

Some SM48 were already retired. 2007, there were 118 SM48 in the stock of PKP and in eastern Poland with transfer trains and as shunting locomotives in use.

In Newag some locos are converted to Type 15D, where the Spenderlok only bogies, traction motors and main frame are used. There comes a 1500 kW engine from Caterpillar for use.

TEM2 industrial railroads

From 1974 to 1989 a total of 310 TEM2 were delivered to Polish industrial railways. They correspond with the length of 17 029 mm as standard.

Parallel to the TEM2 Polish industrial railways were supplied with the corresponding series SM31 type LS1200 and Series T 669.0 of the Czechoslovak State Railways corresponding type S200.
